چکیده
Introduction: Albinism comes from ‘albus’, the Latin word meaning white, and refers to a group of hereditary disorders wherein biosynthesis pigment melanin is absent or reduced. Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) heterogeneous autosomal recessive disorder that involves lack in skin, hair, eyes, associated with ocular visual defects such as photophobia, strabismus, nystagmus low vision. Materials Methods: This was cross sectional descriptive community based study conducted at tertiary care medical college hospital. The Department Ophthalmology enrolled 39 subjects satisfying inclusion criteria. diagnostic criteria for OCA patients included study, were those having features iris transillumination retinal hypopigmentation addition depigmentation hair nails. Results: included, mean age 20 years. largest proportion participants (40%) between 16 25yrs. Using World Health Organization classification on best corrected distance acuity, 8%, 70%, 15% 7% 78 eyes had normal vision, moderate VI, severe VI blindness respectively. Conclusion: There high prevalence refractive, non-refractive mixed ophthalmic among albinos. significant improvement acuity function following optical correction alignment people albinism, despite overall subnormal acuity. Refractive should be encouraged albinism.

BACKGROUND Albinism causes significant eye morbidity and amblyopia in children. The aim of this study was to determine the refractive state in patients with complete oculocutaneous albinism who were treated at the Gynaeco-Obstetric and Paediatric Hospital, Yaoundé, Cameroon and evaluate its effect on vision. METHODS We carried out this retrospective study at the ophthalmology unit of our hosp...
متن کاملOculocutaneous albinism
Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) is a group of inherited disorders of melanin biosynthesis characterized by a generalized reduction in pigmentation of hair, skin and eyes. The prevalence of all forms of albinism varies considerably worldwide and has been estimated at approximately 1/17,000, suggesting that about 1 in 70 people carry a gene for OCA. The clinical spectrum of OCA ranges, with OCA1A b...

Oculocutaneous albinism represents a group of inherited skin disorders characterized by a generalized reduction of cutaneous, ocular, and pilar pigmentation from the time of birth. Oculocutaneous albinism types I and II are the most common, with several other types described. A defect in the melanin synthesis pathway, resulting in reduced formation of melanin, is responsible for oculocutaneous ...

BACKGROUND Childhood is a high risk time for ultraviolet induced skin damage as this age group has more time and opportunity to be outdoors in the sun. Children in Africa with the inherited condition oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) are especially vulnerable due to their lack of protective melanin. They are highly susceptible to developing skin lesions that have both cosmetic and health complicati...
